Chroma I

Loosely inspired by Ellsworth Kelly’s Spectrum of Colors Arranged by Chance, the 9 rugs of Chroma I designed by Colin King study the elusive effect that color has on our aesthetic perceptions. Each minimal, flatwoven design wears stripes like tanlines earned under the summer sun.

Earthy, rich and sun-kissed, Chroma I's palette is steeped in a theory of saturation and reduction with each hue presenting its own distinctly individual narrative from freshly squeezed Sicilian oranges to date-scented tanning oil.

The entirety of this collection is constructed in our flatwoven Zahara method dialing in on the details of this ancient craft. Like grains of sand on the beach, thousands of tightly woven strands of woolen yarn merge together in Zahara rug's impressively meticulous configurations, offering a tidy and light feel underfoot that's perfect for the dog days of summer.

Audacious yet understated, each rug’s self-assured palette plays with perception, fine-shading the whole of each design in the same way that a painter might make subtle variations through the use of light and shadow. Deep reds recall the seeds of overripe pomegranates, striped side by side with muted goldenrod, while rows of oat and amber blur, top to bottom through soft transitions of hand-crafted live wool.

The Dune House

Nostalgic like a polaroid, Chroma I was photographed by Romain Laprade in a Pines Modern house located on the dunes of Fire Island designed and built by Peter Asher between 1968 and 1969. The wooden house filters Asher’s love of the techno-futuristic hyperbolic paraboloid concrete structures of Spanish architect Felix Candela through the improvisational, do-it-yourself sensibility of The Whole Earth Catalog, resulting in the wonderfully quirky abode.

Following suit, all 9 styles of Chroma I reverberate this feeling of poolside geometry with their boldly joyful patterns serving as the architectural framework of each rug’s design.
